Star Trails over Puget Sound

Seattle's Skyline and Mt Ranier

Location:
Kerry Park, Seattle, Washington
Date:
June 19, 2004
Exposure:
1/80 sec at f/6.3, ISO 100
Equipment:
Canon D60 + 50 mm f/1.4

Kerry Park, in Queen Anne, sits on the side of a hill overlooking downtown, Puget Sound, and a hundred miles away and covered in glaciers, Mount Ranier. In the summer of 2004, the Space Needle was adorned by an alien celebrating the opening of Seattle's new Science Fiction Museaum. At the time, locals wondered how Kermet had managed to take over their city.

Technical note: this photo is a combination of several exposures shot over the span of two or three hours. First, at the end of the day, Mt Ranier was captured, then the sunset, reflecting golden warm light from the skyscrapers. A third exposure captures the twilight sky. All of these were recorded from a tripod, resulting in perfectly aligned images. Blending them together in Photoshop is a time consuming, but straightforward process.
