The moon rising over Lee Vining Canyon, outside Yosemite National Park

Moonrise, Lee Vining Canyon

Inyo National Forest, Mono County, California

Equipment:
Canon D60 + Canon 16-35 L at 16 mm

The camps surrounding the higher lakes around Tioga Pass were all closed by a late snow, which put me in the Aspen Campground in lower Lee Vining Canyon. This isn't the first time I've been here; Aspen makes for great Car Camping near Yosemite. The campground is large and while it's nowhere near as crowded as any of the sites within the park, it's not at all private. Still, the view is to die for.

In the foreground is the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada, a few windy miles from the pass. In the background is a twilight sky fading as the moon climbs far above the peaks. The campground backs up to the large but darker mountain in the foreground, covered in pines.

On a technical note, ISO 400 seems to be the limit of what the D60 could produce high quality results with. At this focal length, though, the stars begin to leave trails after 20 seconds, so I needed a "fast" exposure..
